H2L has conducted Mindful Kids classes for a few weeks already, and there would at least 3 children participating each time.

The youngest child we have had is 6 years old, which is also the minimum age requirement for young ones to participate. The oldest age the programme will accept is 8 year of age.

If you have ever had to care for young children, or even teenagers, they may have come across as extremely fidgety, extremely inquisitive, or extremely dreamy… how did H2L Mindful Kids teachers manage to get across anything? My hats off to them, certainly!

Well, I dropped into one class one fine Saturday morning, and discovered for myself how practical, engaging, and easy-to-follow the tasks that Teachers Cathy and Dharanie gave to Joshua, and Hashvita.

After going through their homework from the week before, the cosy class of 5 (and myself sitting in a corner) did a very interesting exercise of observation and memory. After observing a moving pattern for 30 seconds to a minute, the children were each asked to draw the pattern that they remembered.

Not only that, but each had to draw on the same piece of paper — what if one child remembers the pattern differently from the next?

Along the way, they had the chance to see the commonalities that they had with each other, how God had gifted each of them and all of us, the senses to hear, taste, feel, smell, and see.

Later on, as they were asked to repeat the exercise, their concentration and focus also increased because they wanted to capture and draw the pattern as accurately as they could.

After all, Teacher Cathy had instructed, “I want you to draw the pattern you remember.”

As you can imagine, this is not an easy task to do, but they accomplished it successfully. The final picture was not exactly as was shown, but somehow each had contributed what they thought they saw, and this resulted in a far more interesting and colourful picture.
